Optical Polishing

Optical polishing is a special form of polishing.

The work pieces are usually polished on foil or pitch. A polishing liquid, for example water with added cerium oxide, is used. This liquid flows in large quantities on the foil / pitch wheel and is circulated through filters and a mixing tank. The material removal rate is very low and the processing time is usually several hours. To minimize this time, the parts are lapped and / or polished on a conventional machine prior to optical polishing.

The achieved flatness and roughness results in optical polishing are in the nanoscale.
